Short Video Matchmakers Turn Blind Dates Into Business

CategoryNews Briefs

In the early days of matchmaking, matchmakers charged a 260-yuan introduction fee. That business model has long since soured. Today's "Big Four" have carved the dating market into four distinct valuation systems.

Da Chao follows a value-investment approach, hosting 50-million-yuan asset gatherings in Beijing where men pay a 6,000-yuan entry fee and present property deeds and vehicle registrations. His six-person team reportedly generates tens of millions in annual revenue. Aoye takes the opposite route, specializing in shorting overblown reputations—the more someone brags, the harder she scrutinizes them. She requires live-stream guests to display their tax returns, gaining 500,000 followers in six months. Tianshu runs quantitative research, feeding education, income, and age into algorithms that spit out compatibility reports in thirty seconds, amassing nearly 600,000 followers. The sharpest is Ququ Da Nü Ren, who plays leverage arbitrage, teaching ordinary people how to find partners willing to provide resources, peaking at 142 million yuan in annual income.

Of course, this logic is ultimately about reducing love to a balance sheet. But while traffic chases the outrageous, marriage requires the normal—and that gap in risk lands squarely on individual IPs. A matchmaker's judgment builds trust, but it can't guarantee outcomes.

A quick延伸: this industry actually spun out of value-added services from traditional matchmaking. Century Jiayuan's personalized matchmaking revenue was only 52.5 million yuan in 2013, but surged to 260 million by 2015, accounting for over a third of total revenue. This signaled that closing the online information gap alone no longer made money; platforms had to convert users into high-ticket offline advisory clients. Today's short-video matchmakers simply front-load that process into public traffic, using free content to filter for people willing to pay for judgment. It's a shift from hunting traffic to harvesting trust.
