Transsion’s HK Listing Hearing Remains Pending

CategoryNews Briefs

On September 17, the HKEX hearing on Transsion's H-share listing application concluded, yet the exchange has still not issued a formal decision. Normally, results come within one to two working days. The fact that it has dragged on this long makes it an unusual case among the 35 A+H projects in 2026.

The earnings story is even more nuanced. In 2025, Transsion shipped 169 million phones, a 16% year-on-year decline, with global market share dropping from 14% to 12.3%. Gross margin recovered to 22.63% in the first half of 2026, but market share continued falling to 11.3%. Profitability returned while volume did not, thanks to a timing gap between low-cost inventory acquired before memory chip prices rose and subsequent price increases. Operating cash flow left the company by 5.861 billion yuan in the first half, and inventory doubled from 8.9 billion to 18.9 billion yuan—cash turned into stock.

Even its African stronghold is shrinking, with Q2 shipments down 7% and nearly 3 million units under 100 yuan no longer being sold. Transsion's moat has always been localization, but that path can now be copied.

A wider point: Transsion's troubles mirror a common problem for hardware makers in emerging markets—when distribution advantages are replicated and upstream costs become more volatile, product quality alone can't sustain premium pricing. Its mobile internet business, with 290 million monthly active users and an 80% gross margin, essentially uses hardware to gain entry points and then monetizes through software services. That model could be replicated in similar markets like Southeast Asia and Latin America, provided the brand perception shifts from "cheap" to "reliable." With the current memory price hike cycle shortening and AI smartphone upgrade demand yet to take off, Transsion's ecosystem story still needs time to prove itself.
