Lagos auto parts dealers protest Chinese merchants for stealing retail business

CategoryNews Briefs

On September 14, at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, a group of auto parts traders marched through the streets carrying signs reading “Chinese Must Go,” but no vandalism or clashes occurred. They weren’t actually demanding that Chinese people leave; rather, they wanted Chinese merchants to step back from retail and stick to import and wholesale.

For years, the division of labor was clear: Chinese suppliers handled procurement, while local traders managed distribution. But now some Chinese merchants are renting warehouses and opening storefronts, selling directly to consumers at near-wholesale prices—even breaking bulk shipments into smaller lots. As local retailers’ purchase prices gradually converged with upstream suppliers’ retail prices, it became hard for neighborhood shopkeepers to stomach the squeeze.

A Q1 2024 Nigerian labor survey found that informal employment accounted for 92.7% of all jobs, with self-employed workers making up 84%. Behind every auto parts shop are clerks, loaders, drivers, and mechanics. Where Chinese merchants see supply-chain efficiency, local traders see their income stream cut off.

A quick side note: Transsion chose a different path in Africa—keeping its dealer network lean while leaving enough margin for partners to thrive, building sales coverage through local importers, wholesalers, and retailers, and routing after-sales service through networks like Carlcare. That approach helped Transsion retain the top spot in African smartphone shipments in 2025. When Chinese companies go global, they’re quick to treat distributors as unnecessary markups, but channel profits often buy market knowledge, customer trust, and operational breathing room.
