Great Managers Tailor Expectations to Different People

CategoryReading Notes

A great manager tailors expectations to different people rather than taking a lazy, blunt approach.

Take a class of thirty: you can't just tell everyone, "Fight for the top ten, anyone not in it is a failure."

The math says there will always be a bottom ten, and the reasons are complex—background, luck, talent, and more.

If you keep using a one-size-fits-all approach, you'll never achieve overall optimization. The top ten can compete freely; let them push each other. For the middle ten, help them find their strengths—they may never see their total scores climb, but can they discover what they're good at in a single subject? For the bottom ten, show them that life isn't a narrow path. Climbing fast is one choice; enjoying the scenery along the way is another. #ReadingNotes
