Yunnan’s Lincang region has 2.62 million mu of macadamia nuts, with a comprehensive output value of 11.4 billion yuan in 2025. It hides a low-cost path into agricultural supply chains: use drones to solve logistics pain points, then leverage light assets to drive deep processing.

• Logistics breakthrough: Returnee entrepreneur Yang Kaihua assembled a nine-person team with eight drones. Each flight carries 95 kilograms; twelve trips (about two hours) can lift one ton of nuts, with a service fee of only 200 yuan. Compared with manual labor that takes several days, the speed and cost advantage is overwhelming.
• Trust-building mechanism: Wang Dongquan installed floor scales and card-payment systems at purchasing points to automatically calculate “vehicle weight minus net weight equals payment.” Digital weighing removed farmers’ worries about settlements, making the cooperative the only stable channel. Farmers focus on quality alone, selling at market rates.
• Light-asset expansion: After building a primary-processing plant with a capacity of 200 tons per day, Wang did not operate it himself. Instead, he leased it to Ma Jianrui for 360,000 yuan annually over three years. Ma used the plant to process fresh nuts, exceeding 100 million yuan in sales last year. Wang collects rent passively, avoiding the technical and management risks of deep processing.
• Logic of value leap: Ma converted raw nuts into more than forty flavors across five series, selling directly through live streaming. Moving from bulk wholesale by the ton to retail by the case dramatically lifted profit margins.

This approach is worth copying: lock onto a single vertical category, first build trust with drone services billed by the ton, then find idle primary-processing facilities and lease rather than build to lock in supply. Startup costs center on drone equipment and factory lease deposits, with a timeline of about six to twelve months. Risks lie in supply stability and compliance, so you need multiple-source data barriers to secure bargaining power and ensure certified drone operations.

The model relies heavily on local supply chains and cannot be replicated across borders. But within China’s mountainous regions that specialize in characteristic agricultural products, you can copy the “services for resources, resources for capacity” path and hunt for similarly high-barrier opportunities.
