In 2017, bringing a college student to work as a seasonal summer/winter jobber at an electronics factory paid ¥4,000 per referral. By 2019, Foxconn’s sub-referral bonuses had dropped to over ¥2,000, and this year the author of this piece secured a referral fee of ¥1,700. These are all second-hand orders—no wage-advancement risk—and payout comes quickly after onboarding, usually in cash. In other words, a normal referral fee for introducing one worker wouldn’t fall below ¥1,500. (The information asymmetry is terrifying: legions of unemployed people can’t find work, yet factories still can’t fill positions.)
This trend went viral on Kuaishou two or three years ago. Theoretically, there’s another wave of opportunity waiting on Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and WeChat Video Accounts—especially in industrial-zone cities where manufacturing clusters exist. The play is to go directly to factories and negotiate (the labor markets near factories are also worth exploring; they’re fascinating—these agencies charge job seekers ¥200–500 to show up, then charge factories ¥2,000–7,000 per hire.
