PingPod was founded by a stock analyst in New York. He had a frustration: after working late, he wanted to play some table tennis, but there were no venues around, and even if he found one, it would already be closed. Later, he realized many people had the same need—wanting to play but unable to find a court. Finally, one day he made up his mind: since no one was doing this, he would. He rented out vacant store spaces, converted them into table tennis rooms, and named the brand "PingPod."

Each pod contains a single table tennis table, operates 24/7, and is unmanned. You book through a mobile app, which provides the door unlock code. You can bring friends or come alone. They offer a robot serving machine so you can practice against it, with adjustable speed and difficulty levels. Each PingPod is equipped with multiple cameras—not just for surveillance, but also to display the score on a screen. Below the screen is a pink REPLAY button; tapping it replays the last point. You can also watch full match recordings via the app and share highlights on social media. The sports offered have since expanded to include pool, baseball batting, pickleball, and golf simulators.

They have now shifted to a franchise model. You can purchase a PingPod brand license and use their PodPlay system to open your own sports venue. In this way, they transitioned from operating sports facilities to becoming a technology company with higher profit margins.
