Moving companies only accept the healthiest bodies between the ages of 18 and 45. Basic onboarding requirements include a trial assessment for newcomers: carry a 50-kilogram sandbag up and down four flights of stairs ten times within 40 minutes. Some don't pay until after a full week, while others withhold an additional week's wage as a deposit—effectively betting that you won't last a week and will leave empty-handed. The pay (for brute strength) is clearly stated: around 1,300 yuan per day, or roughly 50–100 yuan per hour. But few people can actually maintain that intensity all day; most see their earnings discounted, hovering closer to 800 yuan.
For loads under 50 kilograms, day laborers can handle the搬运. An eight-hour shift earns just over 200 yuan. Those lower on the moving hierarchy face a surplus of day workers in the labor market, often unable to find work all day. "You send a message, and he shows up." Driven by necessity, they choose physical hardship over mental strain.
