University Tuition Fees Are About to Enter the Ten-Thousand Yuan Era

In the past, local governments could generate revenue by selling land and capitalizing on the demographic dividend of cheap labor. But with land sales banned and universities churning out graduates who lack innovative or entrepreneurial capacity—and thus can't create jobs—they're forced to cut costs through unconventional means, like raising prices.

Today, nearly all universities have jumped straight from 5,000 RMB tuition to 10,000 RMB. Of course, top-tier schools raise tuition more gradually, since they have their own spin-off companies, alumni donations, and government subsidies that haven't been cut.
