Is Certification Worth It? Pay for a Certificate, Earn 100K+ Extra Annually
It’s so easy to waste money on certifications, because working professionals are more prone to anxiety and more easily targeted by it.
All in all, there are too many random certificates out there. The ones that actually matter generally fall into just two categories:
1. National-level mandatory occupational licenses. If you want to enter certain industries, you simply must hold the certificate—otherwise, you’re not allowed in. And since these industries typically have entry-level, mid-level, and senior-level tiers, getting certified once you’re in usually puts you on the right track. (So yeah, higher fees make sense.)
2. Certificates required by your company (or side hustle), which usually translate directly into a raise. (Higher fees are normal here too.)
Aside from these two, most other certifications don’t really add much value. Of course, there’s another common motivation: building a personal brand in your industry. Without real experience or credibility, people often plaster all sorts of questionable “industry elite” certificates on their profiles to attract followers. (And charging high prices for that? That’s just predatory.)
Long story short: if a certification helps you hit a concrete goal, it’s worth pursuing. Without that practical edge, it’s mostly just emotional comfort food.
But hey, the training industry is thriving. It preys on anxiety, converts it reliably, and chews through legions of anxious professionals looking to “certify” their way out of their worries every single year.
