How Stripe Became a Global Payment Giant

CategoryNews Briefs

Hard to see anyone write about Stripe.

1. As a payment gateway company, it has genuinely helped many people integrate payment capabilities. (Due to the internet environment at home and abroad, Alipay and WeChat Pay in China are somewhat lacking compared to international standards, which is also related to domestic policies.) Stripe not only supports enterprise payments but, more importantly, solves the payment capability issue for individuals (almost plug-and-play). This is one of the reasons why independent developers, blog creators, and other freelancers have flourished abroad. The ecosystem provides them with tools to solve charging issues; they just need to focus on building products and acquiring traffic.

From this perspective, Stripe has truly won hearts and minds overseas. Especially given how successful Alipay and WeChat Pay have been in China (they didn't completely dominate the overseas market, and apart from local policies, I'm not sure if there are other reasons), this might just serve as a learning experience for Stripe.

Because it became a payment gateway applicable to everyone, all the big players overseas realized that: the more successful Stripe becomes, the more all transaction data from startup companies will, in theory, pass through Stripe. From this angle, investing in Stripe is tantamount to investing in all startup companies.

2. The founders' understanding of the market is actually quite good.

They clearly understand that competitors will inevitably challenge them, especially as they grow better (and they really did give up their honeymoon to return and handle issues).

To ensure long-term operation and avoid complacency, they personally review code, among other things. Their positioning is very clear: they are building transaction infrastructure and payment gateways, so they go all out to ensure stable operations.

To avoid missing potential users, in the early days they would even forcefully take someone else's computer during product demos to make them run their product for an体验.

The company has a tradition of weekly meetings where some key questions are answered. This meeting is even livestreamed for everyone to see (as far as I know, getting in China is the only one doing this well). This is also one of the reasons it has become well-known in the overseas internet community.
