Some Things Are a Waste of Time

A tutor from a graduate school prep center used to constantly tell people, "Go to this graduate program, go to that one—if you don’t get into grad school, you’ve got no future," and so on. Someone once asked him, "Which university and major is your daughter planning to apply to?" He paused for a moment, then replied, "My daughter isn’t going to grad school."

Because I’ve already earned enough money for her lifetime.

Her starting line in life is chairman of the board. She never has to go through the job-hunting process. It’s not that she doesn’t play games—she has her own game, a completely different one. Things like capital management, or recruiting professional managers.

Then again, your child will have to start over from scratch, returning to your original starting point—or maybe even lower—starting all over again from some remote new location. Isn’t that kind of sad?
