The Story of Gumroad

CategoryNews Briefs

The idea behind Gumroad was simple: creators and others should be able to sell their products directly to their audience through a quick, straightforward link.

After launching on Hacker News, it signed up more than 52,000 users on its first day. He quit his job to focus on it full-time and soon raised $8 million in investment—at just 19 years old.

But growth soon stalled. He had to lay off 75% of the staff and was even advised by investors to shut down the project and use the money to start something new.

After downsizing the team, he shifted focus entirely to serving creators. Instead of dreaming of becoming a big company, he concentrated on doing right by the creators who gave him revenue and kept him afloat—gradually pulling through.

He stopped chasing a high valuation. Lying low and finding his own pace to grow was what worked.
