Mutual usefulness is what makes a real network
Someone with zero leverage is just a name-dropper—they throw around titles like "CEO" in casual conversation, but ultimately they're useless.
If you can't build your own network, launch your own project, or forge real partnerships, you've got nothing going for you. From an individual standpoint, lacking both technical skills and startup capital? What good are you? When you're holding no cards, you can't play the game.
Managing employees:
If you can't pay well, offer dignity instead. That "dignity" is the illusion that you're some big shot—everyone's calling you "sir," flattering you, affirming your importance. Most people get easily lost in the praise others heap on them because they crave validation so badly. Feed them a little emotional value, pat them on the head, and they'll sell themselves out without costing you much real money.
Professionals:
In other words, if someone tries to poach you but can't even breach your current salary ceiling, offering you such a measly raise means they don't truly value you.
