Before doing, first consider whether to do it.

People tend to follow the pace set by others pressing them—when pushed hard, they rush in.
Few ever pause beforehand to consider: If I actually help them resolve this bug, will my direct manager be happy or unhappy about it? It's very possible that at the critical moment of equity allocation, your manager and their manager are competing. Because you were hurried into compliance, your manager ends up missing out on stock while theirs secures it. Their manager won't go out of their way to reward you later, but your manager will certainly hold a grudge afterward—simply because you disregarded their interests.
Knowing what to do matters far more than knowing how to do it.
