The local government demonstrated strong leadership by integrating local residents to carefully select breeding and planting sites on a large scale as early as the 1960s, establishing a stable industry that laid the foundation for Guangdong's aged tangerine peel dowry tradition. However, in the 1980s, locals grew eager for quick profits and began chaotic land clearing and planting, which led to plant diseases and a rapid decline in output value. It wasn't until 2011 that the industry recovered its vitality.
That said, due to the plant disease outbreak in the 1980s, there is virtually no aged tangerine peel over 30 years old—don't be fooled. Additionally, Xinhui's production volume is limited: it takes about 100 jin of fresh fruit to produce just 4–5 jin of dried peel, so the supply is not large. There are many "water-soaked" peels (peels treated to appear aged), making them difficult to buy authentically. It's better to visit the local area directly.
