University Starts Offering Civil Service Major
Taking Heilongjiang University as an example, after launching a micro-major in civil service in 2020, the employment rate for undergraduates rose from 86.03% in 2022 to 89.25% in 2023, while the proportion of graduates working in government agencies also increased by 1.92% year-over-year.
Starting in 2024, many universities began offering civil service programs, with numerous majors quietly adding exam-oriented coursework—including but not limited to essay writing (申论), civil service literacy, and aptitude testing (行测). One can only say the world is becoming increasingly surreal.
In the future, you may no longer need to enroll in expensive tutoring institutions for the civil service exam. Picking a civil service major right after the college entrance exam could be a one-stop solution.
That said, civil service positions are starting to impose stricter educational requirements. It’s worth noting that unless you’re from a first-tier university, breaking into the system remains quite difficult. Among the class of 2022, the proportion of graduates from regular universities working in government agencies stayed below 10%, while graduates from second-tier universities struggled to exceed 3%.
