What does it mean to passively accept information?

It means your work is assigned by your boss, or delegated through supervisors. In short, it’s initiated by others. You passively accept tasks and execute them according to others’ requirements, only to be criticized afterward—“this isn’t right,” “that’s not how it should be.” Day after day, you’re adjusting back and forth. What kind of working model is this?

Look at a passage in *Dream of the Red Chamber*: Wang Xifeng manages the Ningguo Mansion. The servants there worked exactly like this. Every morning, they handed Wang Xifeng a token, reporting what they had done and what supplies they had claimed. She would point out their errors—“Recalculate this,” “Do that over”—and send them back.

To a boss, he doesn’t know what tasks you’re handling, nor what value each brings to the company. To a client, he doesn’t know exactly what you’re doing for him. Naturally, they’ll direct you blindly. Why? Because in their eyes, your perceived value is zero. If you add no value, they can toss you around east and west with no cost. That’s simply their decision model.

People only become cautious when they realize someone else will foot the bill.

So always let your boss and clients know: how many tasks you’re handling, why you’re doing them, what benefits they bring, and what each task costs. Would they still micromanage and randomly interfere?

Obviously not.

What distinguishes high-level upward management?

It’s when you get your boss to voice your own requests—and make them believe it’s their idea. That’s the higher stage of upward management.

Take Xiren, the senior maid in Baoyu’s quarters. She disliked Qingwen—she felt those flashy, coquettish women were rivals for favor. But did she throw a tantrum, cry, and threaten suicide? No. Instead, she spoke from Wang Furen’s perspective.

As Baoyu’s mother, Wang Furen was worried about her son being corrupted—especially after Jin Chuan jumped into a well and Baoyu was beaten. Xiren spent every day thinking about what her “boss” was really concerned about, then offered a solution built on those very worries.

What was her proposal? She argued that Baoyu was growing older, and it wasn’t appropriate for him to continue living alongside his sisters and cousins. If something scandalous happened, it would ruin the family’s reputation. And the family’s reputation was precisely Wang Furen’s top concern as the matriarch, while Baoyu’s future was the mother’s foremost priority.

Xiren spoke only on topics her boss cared about most—just as a side effect, she got rid of her competitor, Qingwen.

In any company where there’s real money to be made, the boss always has such的高手 around. What do they do all day? They embed various proposals subtly into the boss’s mind, so that one day, the boss will independently generate an idea and bring it up.

Then these elites step in to execute it.

On the surface, it looks like the boss’s idea being executed by someone else. In reality, the boss’s idea was planted there through subtle, long-term influence.

The boss only sees what they’re allowed to see, and thinks only what they’re guided to think.
