The Cycle of Poverty Among Homeless Americans
The relatively open environment—specifically, a society with a basic social safety net—may allow most people to be unskilled and even survive without participating in the workforce. In one case featured in the article, a woman (the protagonist) had several partners and a brief marriage, raised several children, and eventually ended up single with children, relying on American welfare benefits. However, most of her subsidies went toward rent, which accounted for roughly 80% of her expenses.
