If you really want to look after your descendants, the most reliable way is to give them money—not to arrange some job for them, or pad their résumé with a so‑called prestigious university degree.

It’s easy to hand a kid a number. It’s much harder to teach them how to operate, how to protect wealth.

The only thing in this world that can truly look after future generations over the long run isn’t power, and it isn’t money—it’s a good reputation. If you’ve helped plenty of ambitious people, when you’re gone, they’ll be out there battling and aggressively advancing. If they encounter your child and remember how you conducted yourself back in the day, they’ll raise their standard by half an inch and be unwilling to strike. That’s probably the only blessing you can really pass down.
