The academic credential arms race is intense. In Henan Province, the bare-score cutoff for first-tier university admission is at least 560, while the baseline line hovers around 540. But because Henan has such a large population and relatively few admission slots, students often need to score ten or twenty points above the line just to get in. Those who barely clear the first-tier threshold typically end up at second-tier institutions instead.
