Smart people don’t do things that won’t work out.

If I already know in advance that speaking up is pointless, then what's the point of saying anything at all? Going ahead anyway just to offend someone and burn bridges—only to get the same result—what's the point?

That's what smart people do: if it won't help, they don't say it, so they can still face each other afterward. Some things, if you lay them all on the line, make it impossible to run into the other person later.
You lost a hand—so you accept the loss. You made the bet, you take the result. And if on top of that you go and offend someone, what are you hoping to gain? Just expanding your losses?
