How to Reduce Costs in E-commerce Logistics

Look for a shipping company, but with transparent freight rates, there's very little room to drive prices down.

It's better tobreak down the entire chain and examine each step for problems.

Reoptimize box sizes: Smaller boxes don't offer advantages; they're actually more troublesome to unpack and cost more for outer cartons. Consider increasing box sizes. You might only save a few cents per item, but low-price products make their profit on those very few cents.

Revise the logistics chain: After production, goods are first shipped to the headquarters warehouse, then dispatched nationwide. This inertia-driven process adds cost. Instead, ship directly from factories near warehouses, saving on transfer fees. Since courier rates vary by region, concentrating shipments in lower-cost areas could save even more.

Adjust packaging: Vacuum packaging is prone to bursting during transit, so it must be placed in cardboard boxes. But boxes are expensive. How to solve this? Flip the approach: redesign the product packaging to suit e-commerce shipping. You can ship directly in bubble mailers. The difference between one cardboard box and one bubble mailer is about 40 cents. For a $10 product, that 40 cents represents a 4-percentage-point gain in gross margin.

Adjust specifications: For example, if each bag is originally 500 grams, two bags plus packaging just exceed a courier weight tier, costing an extra few cents per order. Instead, adjust the spec to 400 grams. Lower the price slightly, but avoid crossing into the next weight tier, and gross margin actually improves.
