The Technological Singularity May Double GDP Every Two Weeks

If growth weren’t 3% per year, but doubling every two weeks, how would you position yourself?

As someone who’s been a serial entrepreneur for years, I focus daily on efficiency frontiers. Recently, I listened to an econtalk episode with Robin Hanson on the technological singularity—one takeaway was sobering and gave me plenty to ponder.

Core Assumption: The Limit of Exponential Explosion

Currently, global output roughly doubles every 15 years. But Hanson argues that if we achieve “human brain computer simulation” (i.e., mapping the human brain onto computers), technological progress would cause world output to double every two weeks.

This isn’t sci-fi; it’s his extrapolation of what happens after AI breakthroughs.

Three Warnings for Entrepreneurs

1. The logic of returns to capital and labor will be completely rewritten

Once intelligence can be replicated at near-zero marginal cost, the premium on “human capital” in the traditional sense will plummet. If you’re still building a business model around headcount and hours, your moat in the coming years will be far thinner than you think. True barriers will shift toward: how much irreplicable data, scenarios, and algorithmic compute you own.

2. Only a handful will capture outsized returns

Hanson is optimistic about this, expecting massive wealth creation. But entrepreneurs must stay clear-eyed: a productivity explosion doesn’t automatically translate into personal income explosions. If the tech dividend is captured by a few who control compute and architecture, ordinary people face a sharper Matthew effect. Your side hustle or startup must be built on “irreplaceability,” not “replaceable labor.”

3. Pay attention to the brain–computer interface and AI agent tracks

Since the trajectory points toward “brain simulation” and an “AI productivity explosion,” the infrastructure layer closest to that goal—higher-bandwidth brain–computer interfaces, more efficient AI Agent orchestration systems, and blockchain solutions for compute allocation—could be the biggest Alpha source over the next decade.

Practical Advice

Don’t treat AI merely as a tool; treat it as a “partner.” In the next two to three years, any business model that can’t lift per-person output by 10x using AI risks obsolescence before the singularity arrives. Re-examine your team structure: what share of your work is purely repetitive cognitive labor? Those functions must be automated or outsourced before AI becomes ubiquitous.

The singularity may still be distant, but the trend is set. Don’t find yourself standing still just as the world starts doubling every two weeks.
