Dali B&B Deal Turns Disaster

CategoryNews Briefs

This report tells a rather painful story. Two years ago, when the hit show “Meet Yourself” made Dali’s Fengyangyi village explode in popularity, many urbanites chasing their “utopian island” fantasies thought they’d struck gold. They shelled out hundreds of thousands—or even millions—to pick up turnkey guesthouses with solid foot traffic. And now? That same group is regretting it.

In plain terms: the script has ended, the theater has emptied, and the sucker at the end only realizes they’re holding not a golden rice bowl but a hot potato. Sky-high rents, expensive labor, sharp seasonal swings, and a downturn in consumer spending mean tourists are far less gullible than before. All those so-called “traffic dividends” have already been cashed through. Looking at it this way, the Dali guesthouse mania was just another textbook cycle of influencer-driven economics—regular folks chasing the trend, only to inherit someone else’s mess in the end.

True, some call it the market returning to sanity—but that only works if you can survive months-long off-seasons. Off-topic: after hearing too many tales of “pastoral dreams” turning into cash, you start questioning whether “poetry and distant lands” are as romantic as advertised.

One more thought: Dali guesthouses are a classic example of a “resource-dependent + emotional-value” short-rental model. Their real moat isn’t the property itself but the ability to pull in guests through channels like short-video marketing and OTA rankings. With supply exploding across the board, the industry has shifted from growing the pie to fighting over slices, and the survival rate for individual listings has dropped sharply. History offers plenty of parallels—early guesthouses in Sanya’s Yalong Bay, or the consolidation wave after Moganshan’s boutique inn boom. In both cases, capital and professional operators came out on top, while solo investors driven by sentiment eventually folded, lacking the scale and financial resilience to weather downturns.
