How to Run Effective Offline Marketing Campaigns
Choosing the Right Location and Time for Ground Promotion
Parks, squares, residential complexes, supermarket entrances, large plazas, kindergartens, maternal and baby stores, playgrounds, and so on… There are plenty of locations available for ground promotion, but how should you choose?
Below, I’ll categorize different locations based on target audiences. Please check out these places in your local area first to observe foot traffic and see which demographic dominates.
It’s best to pick a spot close to your home so you can easily head back anytime if needed.
1. Commercial Streets (Priority 1)
Foot traffic here is particularly high, and the crowd consists mostly of people who enjoy shopping, along with some store employees. However, the audience isn’t very targeted—people from all walks of life pass by, and few will patiently listen to your pitch. Generally, only those genuinely interested in your gifts will stop to take a look.
If you choose a commercial street, it’s recommended to start after 3 PM, because that’s when shoppers are more relaxed and store employees have had time to rest. I wouldn’t recommend doing ground promotion at noon—it’s not very effective.
2. Residential Communities (Priority 2)
Residential areas tend to have many mothers and women over 40, who are usually the ones managing household purchases. Their buying power is quite strong. Plus, they tend to love small gifts and have good word-of-mouth spreading potential.
A quick tip: they’re usually only free in the late afternoon, around 4–5 PM. Mornings are spent dropping kids off at school, noons are for cooking, and afternoons involve picking kids up. They only have time after dinner or once they’re back home with the kids.
If targeting residential communities, it’s recommended to start after 4 PM.
3. Parks and Squares (Priority 3)
If there’s a park or square nearby, it can be a great first choice. Parks are filled with moms and their little ones. As long as your gifts are appealing, you’ll definitely draw attention.
If targeting parks, it’s recommended to go after 5 PM, or even later in summer—around 6 or 7 PM.
4. Office Buildings (Priority 4)
Office buildings are mostly filled with office workers. The most obvious trait here is conformity—most people follow a 9-to-5 schedule. Trying to promote during working hours is pointless, and after work, everyone is in a hurry to get home.
So I suggest targeting lunchtime instead. After lunch, people have some spare time and might take a walk or browse around—perfect for ground promotion. Also, promoting Ele.me delivery coupons near office buildings tends to work really well.
5. University Entrances (Priority 5)
I wouldn’t recommend going early in the morning near universities—everyone’s busy with classes.
I suggest aiming for the 4 to 7 PM window. That’s when more students head out to eat or hang out, making it easier to attract attention.
6. Kindergartens or Tutoring Centers (Priority 6)
The crowd outside kindergartens and tutoring centers is mostly moms. Definitely avoid mornings—they’re happily dropping their kids off, and pulling someone over to talk about an app would be annoying. Plus, many moms have to head straight to work after dropping their kids off, so they don’t have time to listen to a long pitch.
If targeting kindergartens, it’s recommended to start after 3 PM, when parents come to pick up their kids. Waiting for pickup can be boring, and once they’ve picked up their kids, they’re usually not in a rush to go home. As long as your gifts appeal to kids and keep them engaged, you’ll get much better results.
Preparation
- Choose gifts based on your target audience
Select small gifts tailored to different promotion venues, focusing on users’ psychological needs to maximize results.
For commercial streets, I recommend choosing gifts mainly targeted at women—like hair clips, hair ties, rings, or other lifestyle items. Adding some balloons can help create a lively atmosphere and attract attention.
At supermarket entrances, prioritize practical household items. For example, if you’re giving away tissues, offer three packs for five yuan. Don’t just hand out one pack—people won’t care. Show generosity! Balloons can also help build a fun atmosphere.
Inside residential communities, consider preparing small toys or stationery for kids—balloons, school supplies, light-up drool bibs, etc. The key is to attract children. If kids love your gifts and refuse to leave, their moms will surely cooperate. Since your main audience is moms, make sure your gifts appeal to kids.
For office buildings, the main audience is young white-collar workers. Small potted plants, succulents, or even tiny turtles make great gifts. Alternatively, go for something novel, visually appealing, or just plain cute—like keychains, room decorations, or small plush toys. Since the audience is mostly female, tailor your gifts to women’s preferences.
At parks, most people come for evening strolls after dinner, giving you plenty of time to recommend downloads and hand out gifts. In this setting, I suggest focusing on creative gifts like trendy balloons or night lights—they work really well. Park lighting is often dim at night, so glow-in-the-dark gifts are especially eye-catching. Honestly, I think everyone should try promoting at parks—it’s the fastest and least resource-intensive option.
Outside universities, you can参考 gifts similar to those used in office buildings—cute items that young women will instantly want. Women are quite emotional, so you can also pair them with practical items like selfie sticks or mushroom-shaped cups, but make sure they’re attention-grabbing.
Outside kindergartens or tutoring centers, I recommend choosing toys that appeal to kids. Search Taobao for children’s toys or novel map puzzles, or pick seasonal gifts depending on the weather—like small fans and bottled water in summer, masks in winter, or snacks year-round.
Quick tip:
When handing out gifts, always mix high-end and budget options to keep costs down.
Last Double 11, I handed out rings at ground promotions—50 yuan for a box of 100. I gave away two boxes that day, paired with ear studs at 3 yuan per pair and earrings at 10 yuan for 50 pairs.
Really, you can never guess what customers will prefer. When you place both premium and budget items in the same fancy box, their choices can surprise you.
Also, during ground promotions, wear all the gifts you’re giving out. What does “wearing” mean? Put on the rings, swap the earrings, wear the headband. When people see how good they look on you, they’ll want what you’re wearing. It’s subconscious guidance that grabs attention.
- Other materials to prepare
To run a successful ground promotion, you need more than just gifts—you’ll need other preparations too.
Other materials:
① Power banks—in case a customer says their phone is dead, or even your own phone runs out. Learn how to set up a mobile hotspot, since some customers may say they have no data.
② A megaphone—record a message offering free toys (customize the recording based on your target audience).
③ Flyers, ID badges, uniforms, hats. If possible, bring a pull-up banner or small display cabinet to look more professional.
④ Print some paper sign: “Scan the QR code to join the group—free gifts!” If resources allow, make a poster instead.
⑤ The megaphone is a must-try. Having it play a loop attracts lots of kids, which brings their moms over too.
