Too often, middle managers' interests align with neither the boss nor the rank-and-file.
You put in overtime, maybe you don't get a raise; the boss isn't making money either, but the middle manager gets promoted.
Inefficient work is still work. It's useless to the boss and the overworked employees, but for middle managers, it's direct proof of strong leadership, effective team management, and a buzzing work environment—all of which can steadily lead to promotions, stock options, and life-changing leaps.
