Someone Always Has to Pay the Bill: No Free Lunch in Life

My wife isn't unaware; she's just venting.
What she needs isn't for me to obey her every request, but simply to listen.
She knows I'm not foolish enough to actually comply,
and I know I couldn't have complied anyway.
Because behind me, there's no one left.
She can make demands or criticize—no matter how unreasonable—because she knows I'll be the one to pick up the slack.
I don't make demands or act out because I know there's no safety net behind me.
At any time, someone has to foot the bill.
