Which Home Appliances Significantly Boost Happiness?
CategoryShopping Notes
Hope this helps you sidestep common pitfalls and spend your money where it counts. It’s also a chance to recap some of my recent purchases—I’ve been pretty happy with a few products this year:
Then there’s the smart plug and lighting—the best bang for the buck is the Xiaomi bulb paired with the smart plug for air conditioners.
You can adjust the color temperature manually or set schedules. The bulb doesn’t require flipping a wall switch—you control it via the app (there’s a slight delay, but it’s minor). Siri integration is smooth too. If your home wiring is already fixed, swapping in a smart bulb is the easiest path to automation. At its core, it’s just app-based remote control.
If your wiring isn’t fixed—or if you’d rather control lights through the outlet—I’d recommend going the smart plug route. Response time is faster, and the overall feel is smoother. It works with Siri and HomeKit, which elevates the experience. The upside: lower latency and more precise power cycling. I’d strongly suggest a model with power monitoring so you can track energy usage for kettles, washing machines, fridges, and other appliances—giving you a clear picture of your electricity consumption plus remote management capabilities.
Beyond basic smart plugs, the top pick is Xiaomi’s smart AC companion plug. Aside from standard remote power control, it can monitor your AC’s energy use, adjust temperature, and even control airflow direction. Think of it as turning your phone into an all-in-one AC remote—no more hunting for the physical controller, and it works with voice assistants. It supports almost every AC brand on the market.
A solid Wi-Fi router is non-negotiable for a good smart home setup. I’d say at minimum go for Xiaomi’s AX3600—that’s what I’m using now. It’s reliable overall, though it occasionally drops connection (not a dealbreaker, but noticeable). If you downgrade from this tier and add more smart devices, you’ll almost certainly run into lag and connectivity hiccups.
Next up, the most worthwhile purchase is a smart speaker. Calling, streaming music, and hands-free convenience are genuinely hard to give up once you’ve experienced them—you’ll never want to go back. For around $70, you can snag a no-screen model that still delivers respectable sound quality without sacrificing audio. I’m quite satisfied with Apple’s HomePod mini, but I’ve already let go of Xiaomi’s sub-$15 speakers—the experience just wasn’t there. Read my full review
Finally, the high-speed blender has been another winner. I grab cheap produce—often $0.70/lb on sale at the nearby supermarket—and whip up morning and evening smoothies. Pair that with homemade pancakes, and it’s a solid, fuss-free way to handle breakfast and dinner. Check out my hands-on review
