How to Build a Stock Trend Newsletter

CategoryNews Briefs

I think I’ve posted this before.

I was laid off, then teamed up with a friend to explore opportunities. We originally wanted to build a SaaS tool for stock trend analysis, but we both lacked coding skills. While looking for a developer and preparing to give up equity, I discovered newsletters and other tools that could help bring ideas to life for free (I’m guessing it involved web scraping, since manual filtering was still needed to sift through all the noise).

The final product ended up being a weekly push of two stocks—selected from social sentiment, specifically those carrying positive momentum, while also factoring in other fundamentals.

This product was acquired a year later.

Initial promotion was done via Reddit, Facebook groups, and PHF, which brought in 200 subscribers. We then launched a 50% referral commission program, and within a short while, monthly revenue hit $6,000. A year later, a financial company acquired it.

Their idea was solid: monitor social sentiment and package it as a paid newsletter.

There are probably similar WeChat accounts in China doing fundamental analysis. I once learned about a paid group that cost 500 RMB per year—the public account articles were free, but each major stock pick came with a bonus of 4,000–5,000 RMB. It’s easier to make money when you’re close to the money.
