When you first join a company, you get paid less and are willing to work late. Your manager loves it because he sees you as the perfect replacement for the senior employees who draw high salaries but barely contribute.

But think about it. As you grow, he’ll have no more rewards left to hand out. Keep growing, and you’ll become an architect on par with your manager. Even though you may not have the same tenure or seniority, you’ll already be a strong candidate for director.

Now the company is deciding whether to promote that manager or promote you, the architect.
