WeChat Pay System Risk: Withdrawal Blocked After Restriction
Back in the day, we probably warned you about keeping too much money in WeChat Pay, Alipay, and similar channels. Their user agreements are problematic: you only have the right to use the funds, not ownership. This creates a major issue—accounts can be frozen arbitrarily without any obligation to assist with subsequent matters (for example, once an account is frozen, you can’t withdraw your money. The user agreement explicitly states they have no duty to help you cash out or transfer the funds, because they informed you upfront that you only have usage rights, not ownership). Theoretically, both user data and assets belong to the account owner, not the user. As long as you don’t make a fuss, the account is effectively severed from you. In the early years, there were even reports of people jumping to their deaths from the headquarters building over withdrawal issues. Take this as a cautionary tale—recently, someone else fell under risk control and couldn’t access 60,000 yuan.
I recommend switching promptly to Cloud QuickPass (UnionPay’s app) or depositing large sums in one of the Big Four state-owned banks. Try to keep substantial funds out of social apps like WeChat and Alipay.
