The Early Growth of Product Hunt

CategoryNews Briefs

Product Hunt has now become an indispensable marketing channel and community for launching new internet products.

It started as a newsletter built by the founders, with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, focused on sharing new internet products (these early users became the cold-start traffic).

Later, they wanted to build a community platform, but existing tools like Twitter fell short of their vision, so they built the current website themselves.

Once the community site launched, people who submitted new products would invite friends to upvote them to boost their rankings. These newly acquired users would then submit their own products, creating a viral loop.

As search clicks grew (since submitters embedded upvote links or APIs on their own product pages, driving referral traffic back), the SEO benefits kicked in—ranks consistently stayed high—and search engines eventually became the primary traffic channel.
