It’s largely a dead end — at least in China, and pretty much abroad too. On one hand, the technology isn’t sharp enough to preserve the beneficial compounds that actually set animal-based products apart. On the other, the plant-based replacements aren’t significantly better than their animal counterparts. And finally, sales never scale up, which keeps costs from dropping; when that hits the consumer end, prices barely undercut animal-based foods, so buyers naturally prefer the real thing.
The market leader saw its stock nearly double when the “plant-based” narrative first took off, but with no盈利 proof to back it up, it quickly fell back to its IPO price.
