2023 Systemically Important Banks by Country
The banks are divided into five groups based on their systemic importance scores, from lowest to highest: the first group has 10 banks, including China Everbright Bank, China Minsheng Bank, Ping An Bank, Huaxia Bank, Bank of Ningbo, Jiangsu Bank, Guangfa Bank, Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Nanjing, and Bank of Beijing; the second group has 3 banks, including CITIC Bank, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, and Postal Savings Bank of China; the third group has 3 banks, including Bank of Communications, China Merchants Bank, and Industrial Bank; the fourth group has 4 banks, including Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Agricultural Bank of China; and no banks have entered the fifth group yet.
In plain terms, a systemically important bank is one that has a major impact on the national financial system when risks occur, and it faces stricter financial regulation compared with other banks (which means relatively higher security for ordinary users).
