They rarely wake up from such fantasies. They waste their years, and no matter their age, they keep repeating the same excuse: "The real battlefield of my life is still ahead of me. I haven't given it my all, which is why I'm only at this level right now." They say this over and over until they grow old and die. Only then do they realize that everything they have experienced up to that point has been entirely real.
It's essentially self-deception—because the true you really is only capable of this much, and you simply cannot accept it.
