Why must one personally be wealthy?

When you’re the one calling the shots, what’s the point of money? When you’re not, what’s the point of money? As long as that wealthy person belongs to you — as long as they bow before you — that’s all that matters.

Think about ancient Chinese officialdom.

Do more, make more mistakes; do less, make fewer mistakes; do nothing, make no mistakes. Rich people aren’t necessarily any less corrupt — they just don’t get their hands dirty themselves.

During your work, be sure to keep your own hands clean.

If you’re always the one getting your hands dirty, others will see you as someone only fit for use — never promotion, never invited into the inner circle. How many flaws, how many leverage points handed to others by the ones who roll up their sleeves?

“The ruler who lacks discretion loses his ministers; the minister who lacks discretion loses his life. Affairs that are not kept secret bring failure.” That is precisely why the wise man is careful and discreet, choosing not to act rashly.

Those born into resource networks — or those who aspire to enter them — deliberately cultivate habits, known as building accounts. Build a flawless record, polished and impeccable. Only then can you catch the eye of higher circles and be recruited, because they know you’re one of them. You understand the game.
