Disease Mutual Aid Crowdfunding Fraud
If you pay attention, you’ll notice that many of your group chats are full of medical crowdfunding appeals. Most of them are scams—people who don’t exist, no verifiable information. These schemes exploit people’s compassion and are deeply harmful because they erode trust: after such fraud, ordinary people become reluctant to donate, consuming the last shred of trust between strangers.
These scams typically thrive through collusion between official platforms and fraudulent syndicates (for mutual profit). The earliest widely exposed case involved a platform taking over 40% commission on donations—later reduced—but when they partner with fraud rings, the situation is far harder to track or regulate.
Even official charitable organizations (such as the Red Cross) aren’t always reliable; how much less can we expect from unregulated for-profit intermediaries.
