How many lawyers are there in China?

In 2023, the Ministry of Justice released the “Statistical Analysis of Lawyers and Grassroots Legal Services in 2022.” The data shows that by the end of 2022, there were more than 651,600 practicing lawyers nationwide.

The legal profession fits a sales model. For example, divorce lawyers can receive 20% of the property settlement. So business volume and the number of clients served determine income—this is a classic sales-driven profession.

Most lawyers don’t make money; only a small handful do.
