Preparing to Build Your Ideal Customer Profile | Sales Tips
Sayings:
To be honest, I’m quite amateur and introverted when it comes to sales. I tend to do thorough preparation before diving in.
The term “user persona” seems to have gained popularity alongside internet operations roles. I’m not sure how others define it, but my understanding is that it means attaching specific labels to users to make their形象 more concrete and vivid.
In other words, by tagging users with clear attributes, we can better understand what kind of people they are, which helps us make targeted decisions and run precise, customized marketing campaigns.
Sales works the same way. By visualizing your ideal customer profile and running targeted marketing activities, you can also precisely locate where your customers are and acquire them more effectively. This is exactly why I titled this post “Building Customer Personas and Choosing Acquisition Channels”—because these two concepts are closely connected.
Two benefits of building a customer persona:
1. It allows you to run more precise marketing campaigns, reducing costs while improving ROI (similar to getting better value for money).
For example, if your target customers are investment-oriented users seeking higher returns, combining interest-rate coupons, cash red packets, and shopping cards for promotions will likely yield better conversion rates than simply offering data plans.
2. Choosing the right acquisition channels
For instance, if your ideal customers are people with substantial disposable income, advertising on media platforms aimed at middle school students would be a waste of resources. Placing ads in financial communities, on the other hand, would be much more appropriate. (These are just examples to illustrate the point—don’t take them too literally.) In general sales, the key is to find the decision-maker—the person holding the purse strings—that’s who your real customer is.
Based on these goals, I prefer to build my customer persona before even starting in sales.
How?
Simply assign clear attributes and tags—such as “young,” “high spending power,” “tech-savvy,” and so on.
That’s basically it.
Choosing customer acquisition channels
Once you’ve tagged your customers and identified their key traits, it becomes much easier to find where they gather and run precise marketing campaigns.
Take wealthy suburban housewives, for example. Their tags might include “housewife” and “home decorator.” Since they often buy flowers to decorate their homes, promoting on flower-delivery platforms would be highly targeted.
These are the clearer insights that tagging your customers provides. (The reason I used the term “potential customer persona” in the title is twofold: first, because I haven’t actually worked in sales yet, my persona may be somewhat inaccurate; second, it’s about maximizing marginal returns—even if a particular person doesn’t perfectly match the profile, as long as they share similar characteristics, they could become a customer in the future or refer someone who does. That’s the marginal benefit.)
In general, customer personas are built in two ways: either through company training, or by creating your own personalized standards based on your product catalog.
For example, my company trains us to target marketing staff at wealth management platforms. But after reviewing our product library, we found many media resources aimed at car owners. This means high-net-worth individuals and automotive brand marketers could both qualify as potential customers.
So here’s the bottom line: first, build a sales product library that suits you; next, create a customer persona to find the right people. Once these preparations are in place, you can move on to the actual sales process.
I want to show you the beauty of the rest of my life.
What is sales really about?
It’s about connecting your products and resources with the right people. Once that’s done, the only thing left to negotiate is the price.
++++ I’m currently unemployed, which isn’t great for public order.
