How to Handle a Frozen Bank Card

CategoryLife Tips

When a worker’s bank card gets frozen, sorting it out is a real pain—you have to go to the branch in person, and all you’ve done is move a few bucks. You also have to explain yourself. Damn it, when you’re working, they’re working; when you work, they’re off too… when they’re off, you’re still at work. And you still have to take time off, bring your ID, household register, transaction history, and social security card, then sign paper after paper.

And then there’s this:

You’re working, they’re off—weekends.

You’re off, they’re off—holidays.

You’re working, they’re working—workdays.

So most people just end up taking time off to visit the bank. And the worst part? Once you show up, they might flag you as amber or red.

Here’s a workaround I’m testing right now:

First, contact your bank’s customer service from your phone. Describe your recent transactions and make sure they sound normal and legitimate.

Then ask if the issue can be resolved online.

If they say no, tell them you’re going to file a formal complaint. Call the State Council, the CBIRC (China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission), and the People’s Bank of China to report that your card was frozen without cause.

Next, file a complaint via 12315 (the national consumer complaint hotline), and call 110 to report suspected bank theft. Your reason? After the freeze, you couldn’t view transaction details or even check your balance, so you reasonably suspect money was silently siphoned.

Then lodge a complaint with the State Council app, accusing the bank and local police of colluding to seize depositors’ funds under the pretext of freezing cards.

At every step, tell the customer service rep exactly who you’re contacting next and how you’re escalating the complaint.

More often than not, they’ll say they’ll look into it and call you back within a few business days with an update. No branch visit needed. (They’re already waiting on my result.)

Here are a few complaint hotlines for reference:

People’s Bank of China: 010-66194114
CBIRC Hotline: 12378
State Council Hotline: 010-83101987
PBOC Consumer Protection Hotline: 12363
Police: 110
